Abstract
This study was carried out to assess ownership and utilization of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) by agricultural extension agents in North Central, Nigeria. Multistage sampling procedure involving purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed in selecting 450 Extension Agents used for the study. Primary data were collected with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics according to the specific objectives of the study. The results of the socio-economic characteristics of the extension agents revealed that majority of the extension agents (42.00%) were over 40 years with 80.67% of them married. Again, 63.11% had post-secondary education but the majority (58.44%) earned at most N90,000 monthly. Only 10.89% earned monthly income between N91,000 and N120,000. Further analysis revealed that 89.33% of the GSM phones used by the extension agents were owned while 69.5% and 60% of them owned radio and televisions respectively. In addition, only about 32.44% and 25.26% of the extension agents owned computers and internet facilities, respectively. However, 53.11% of the books used by the extension agents belonged to the government. Generally, a reasonable percentage of ICTs like video (26.00%), computer (15.56%), internet (19.11%) and camera (18.44%) were not available. It was recommended that the income of the extension workers should be increased to enable them to afford most of the ICT tools required for agricultural extension and as well provide the necessary ICT tools needed in agricultural extension services.
