Abstract
The study was to evaluate some soil physicochemical properties with fertility index and implications on soil fertility in Etinan Akwa Ibom State. Soil samples were collected from three locations Efa1, Efa2, and Efa3 to determine some physicochemical properties using standard procedures. The variation of sand was low (CV<15%) while silt and clay were moderately high (CV>32%) and moderate (CV>13%) respectively. Soil pH and electrical conductivity had a minimal concentration (CV<15%). Organic carbon, organic matter, and total nitrogen were low in concentration while available P was within the moderate class (7-20mgkg-1) K, Ca, Mg, Na, EA, and ECEC in the areas were all low in the soil fertility rating. Base saturation showed low concentrations in the three studied soils and was not higher than 50%. The result of this study showed that soils in Efa1, Efa2, and Efa3 in Etinan were largely similar in terms of physicochemical characteristics. Integrated application of organic and inorganic fertilizers, planting of cover crops, liming, and improved agronomic practices are recommended for sustainable crop production in the area of the study.
