Abstract
Technical efficiency of TMS cassava varieties by farmers in Ebonyi State, Nigeria was studied. One hundred and twenty respondents were selected using multi-stage random sampling techniques. Primary data for the study was collected using a well-structured questionnaire and complimented with interview scheduled. Percentage responses and Cobb Douglas stochastic frontier production function were used to address the objectives of the study. The results of the socioeconomic characteristics showed that 79.16 % of the farmers were married, the mean age of farmers was 42.50 years and most of them (25%) and (75%) were male and married respectively. The mean education was 6.2 years with only 10% that does not have formal education. Also, 73.34% of the farmers had above 10 years of farming experience. The average farm size and household size stood at 1.45 hectares and 6.7 members respectively. As well, 63.3% of the farmers were members of cooperatives, while 36.7% were not. As well, 66.7% of the farmers had access to credit, while 33.33% does not. Furthermore, the determinant factors to technical efficiency in TMS cassava varieties production were level of education, household size and farm size. The need to enhance farmers’ access to educational programmes, land and extension services were proffered.
